Issue
Users see a “509 Bandwidth Limit Exceeded” error, as shown in the screenshot below, and are unable to access the site.

Cause
One of the following causes is likely.
A. Unpaid Invoices
If a payment fails, Shifter will restrict account access.
Restrictions will apply to accessing the site, launching WordPress, generating and deploying, downloading artifacts, and other actions.
B. Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
As stated on the pricing page, each plan has storage and monthly bandwidth limits. If traffic exceeds the monthly bandwidth or storage limit, server throttling will be applied. When a customer approaches these limits, we send a notification regarding their site.
C. Storage Limit Exceeded
As stated on the pricing page, each plan has storage and monthly bandwidth limits. When storage reaches the limit, server throttling will be applied. As you approach the limit, we will send each customer a notification regarding their site.
Solutions
Check your current payment status, bandwidth, and storage usage in the Shifter dashboard and take the necessary steps.
A. If Payments Are Pending
- Update your payment method in the Shifter dashboard and complete all payments. For instructions on updating your billing information, refer to the support document “ Updating Billing/Payment Information.”
B. Exceeding Bandwidth Limits
i: Enabling Media CDN
Shifter Media CDN extends the WordPress Media Library functionality and stores media on a dedicated CDN. Offloading media to the CDN can reduce bandwidth usage. Additionally, Shifter supports the WebP media format when Media CDN is enabled. When Media CDN is enabled, Shifter converts media to the WebP format without modifying the original files.
ii: Plan Upgrade
Higher-tier plans offer greater data transfer allowances, bandwidth, and storage capacity. For information on upgrading your plan, refer to the support document “ Upgrading Your Shifter Plan.”
C. Exceeding Storage Limits
i: Deleting Unnecessary Files
Launch WordPress and delete any unnecessary files. Then, generate artifacts to have the storage capacity recalculated.
ii: Enable Media CDN
Shifter Media CDN extends the WordPress Media Library functionality by storing media on a dedicated CDN. Offloading media to the CDN reduces storage usage. Additionally, Shifter supports the WebP media format when Media CDN is enabled. Simply by enabling Media CDN, Shifter will convert your media to Web formats without modifying the original files.
iii: Upgrade Your Plan (For Tier 1 or Tier 2 plan users)
Higher-tier plans offer greater data transfer allowances, bandwidth, and storage capacity. For information on upgrading your plan, see the support document “ Upgrading Your Shifter Plan.”
iV. Enabling “Pay-As-You-Go CDN Transfer Options” (for Tier 2 or Tier 3 plan users)
