How to Change a Domain Name on a Live Site

This guide explains how to avoid or minimize downtime when changing the domain name of a live production site. To follow this guide, you must have an account with two or more sites that use custom domain names. If you only have a single-site subscription, please contact us.

Scenario

Suppose you have a Tier 1 subscription site using the domain example.com
and want to change it to example.org
. You have two subscriptions.

  • Site A: Tier 1, domain name example.com
  • Site B: Tier 1, no domain name registered.

Example Workflow

  1. Add the domain name example.org to Site B and verify it.
  2. Add Site A’s DNS records to the DNS servers for example.net.
  3. Unlink the domain name example.com from Site A.
  4. Assign the domain name example.net to Site A.
  5. Generate an artifact on Site A and rewrite the URL.
