Additional Steps Before and After a WordPress Upgrade

Shifter automatically upgrades WordPress core files to the latest version, but themes and plugins are not included. Therefore, you’ll need to update them manually.

What to Do Before Upgrading WordPress:

  • Update your plugins and themes to the latest versions.

What to Do After the WordPress Upgrade:

  • Upgrade the database (follow the steps below).
  • Update plugins and themes (if you haven’t already).
  • If PHP errors occur in plugins or themes, fix them (contact the developer for instructions on how to fix them). For information on how to check for errors, see “Viewing and Saving PHP Error Reports.”

Upgrading the Database

  1. Launch WordPress and click [WordPress Admin].
  2. Click [Upgrade WordPress Database] to continue the upgrade process.
  3. Click [Continue].
  4. The latest version of WordPress is now available!

If WordPress asks for a username and password

  1. Return to the Shifter dashboard.
  2. Click the [WordPress Admin] drop-down menu, then click [Reset Admin Link].
  3. Click [WordPress Admin] again.
  4. You can now access the WordPress dashboard.
