Magic, you say? That’s right! It really is magic. 🎩 Shifter Magic Links is a unique feature within the WordPress ecosystem. Customers can log in to their WordPress sites with a single click from the Shifter dashboard. Here’s an overview of each part of this feature.
Features
-
Your Shifter and WordPress usernames are synchronized. When you create a new WordPress site in Shifter, the username from your Shifter account is applied during the installation process. For example, if your Shifter username is foobarbaz, the username for your WordPress site will also be foobarbaz.
-
WordPress Passwords and Shifter Magic Links This is the magic behind Shifter Magic Links. For WordPress sites hosted on Shifter, the password for that user account is rotated every time the site is launched. A secure, random password is generated for one-time use only. When you click a link from the Shifter dashboard, the password is applied just once using a tokenized link. This provides a direct link to log in to your WordPress site.
-
Sharing Magic Links If you’re collaborating with trusted friends or clients and need to share access to your WordPress site, you can generate Shifter Magic Links from within your WordPress site to share temporary access to the WordPress dashboard without having to create a username or password. The URL you create and share is tokenized and expires after use.

-
Passwordless Login Previously, Shifter Magic Links as a “passwordless login” feature. While the functionality remains the same, we’ve renamed it as we continue to develop and improve the feature based on your feedback! Thank you for your support
-
User Roles and Permissions in Shifter Teams For sites using Shifter Teams, all team members access WordPress using Shifter Magic Links. Depending on each member’s role and permission level, certain features may be restricted or made available.
Troubleshooting
-
The WordPress login page is still displayed The most common reason for this is that Shifter has not yet generated a Magic Link yet. The link is generated once WordPress starts up. Trying the WordPress link again or clicking it from the Shifter dashboard should resolve the issue.
If clicking the login link to WordPress from the Shifter dashboard does not automatically log you in, the most common cause is that Shifter has not yet generated the Magic Link.
-
The WordPress login page is still displayed even after retrying The most common reason for repeated login attempts is errors caused by custom PHP functions and themes or plugins. Resolving this type of error may be site-specific and may require further troubleshooting.
-
Using Shifter Safe Mode If this occurs, our first recommendation is to try Shifter Safe Mode. This is a feature available from the Shifter dashboard that is designed to allow users to access their WordPress site while disabling custom themes and plugins. This eliminates potential sources of error and provides a clean environment for testing the login and accessing the site.

Contacting Support If the recommended solutions do not work, please let us know. We’d be happy to help you troubleshoot. Please contact our team while logged into the Shifter dashboard and provide your site ID.
